The New England Dance Lab is a part of the Regional Dance Development Initiative (RDDI), a program of New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project (NDP). The Dance Lab is designed to maximize local and regional support for dance artists by catalyzing existing resources and redefining the relationship between artist, presenter, and community. The initiative focuses on increasing the capacity of dance artists by strengthening the articulation of work, its inspirations and processes, and by developing presenter relationships and new markets.
During the Dance Lab, participants will have the opportunity to share their work with a peer group of artists within the region, and to work with faculty/mentors of national stature in a variety of areas related to artistic growth and professional development in dance. On August 3 and 4, Dance Lab participants will take part in a Presenters/Artist Exchange, where they will be able to show their work and informally meet regional presenters.
After the Dance Lab, workshops will be held in each of the New England states, addressing topics like funding sources, marketing, and networking. These sessions will be open to all interested artists, companies, presenters, and supporters. Workshop dates and details will be announced soon.
The New England Dance Lab will be led by Project Coordinator Mary Chapin Durling. The New England Dance Lab partners and planning committee include Ruth Birnberg, Boston Dance Alliance; Sandra Burton, Williams College; Sara Coffey, Vermont Performance Lab; Ranjanaa Devi, UMASS Amherst; David Dorfman, Connecticut College; Mary Chapin Durling, Fitchburg State College; Cathy Edwards, International Festival of Arts and Ideas, New Haven; Ford Evans, Dartmouth College; Laura Faure, Bates Dance Festival; Mark Fleisher, Festival Ballet Providence; Dante Del Guidice, Rhode Island College; Donna McNeil, Maine Arts Commission; and Robert Richter, Connecticut College.
The New England Dance Lab is made possible with the generous support of the Aliad Fund at The Boston Foundation and national support for the National Dance Project from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the six New England state arts agencies.
NEFA creatively supports the movement of people, ideas, and resources in the arts within New England and beyond, makes vital connections between artists and audiences, and builds the strength, knowledge, and leadership of the region's creative sector.
